CHARITABLE ORGANIZATION 501-C3 STATUS PENDING
We are a charitable organization dedicated to making a positive impact in the world. Please take a few moments to read Joshua's Story.
Dear Friends,
My name is Carol Fancher, founder of Joshua’s Cross, and I would like to share our story with you — a story of unimaginable loss, unwavering faith, and the living hope we have in Jesus Christ and His unfailing love for each of us.
It seemed like just another day. I had traveled to Georgia to babysit my grandchildren. As the day was coming to an end, I received the call every parent fears. My son’s fiancée was on the line. I could immediately tell something was terribly wrong. She said there had been an accident and Joshua had been rushed to the hospital.
My body froze. I could not speak. My mind could not comprehend what my heart already feared — that I might never see my precious son again.
I dropped to my knees and prayed, “Lord God, please let him be okay.”
I called the closest family member I had nearby. Barely able to speak, I cried out in terror, “I need you… right now… I need you!” My son-in-law’s mother, Kim, rushed to stay with our grandchildren while I drove to the hospital. Forty-five minutes later, I arrived to find dear friends waiting for me in the parking lot. I could not walk inside alone.
They escorted me into a hospital room where I found my son lying lifeless.
My son, Joshua Tyler Denmark, passed away from fentanyl poisoning on March 22, 2023, at the age of 32. He had battled addiction for much of his adult life. That day changed my life forever. Like so many parents, I had prayed endlessly for his recovery — but God had a different plan. I will never say this journey has been easy, and the ache I carry will never fully leave this side of heaven.
But in my darkest hours, God was with me.
He reminded me that He is still sovereign, still good, and still present. It would have been so easy to fall into despair that unthinkable day. Instead, I cried out to the Lord. I asked Him to help me — and I asked Him to use Joshua’s story to pierce the hearts of those suffering from addiction and even those trapped in the darkness of supplying the drugs destroying lives.
I prayed that Joshua’s story would find people exactly where they are and become a catalyst for change.
Before Joshua’s funeral, I contacted my dear friend Julie, who led what was then Sunrise Retreat (now Prodigal Child Ministries). We established a memorial fund so that, in lieu of flowers, gifts could support families walking the same road addiction had forced us to travel. That ministry had given me hope and the support of other parents who understood my pain. Julie told me she wanted to do something meaningful with the funds — something that would honor Joshua’s life.
During that time, I was reminded of a story Joshua once shared with me — a story that would become the foundation of Joshua’s Cross.
While in rehabilitation, during a season when he felt hopeless and convinced he had ruined his life, a counselor told him that even in the darkest places, Jesus is only a prayer away. That through salvation we are made new. That we are the clay and He is the potter — able to rewrite any story. That no matter our past, God can redeem it for good. That we are deeply loved and never defined by our mistakes.
The counselor gave Joshua a small olive-wood cross from the Holy Land.
Joshua treasured that cross so much that he drilled a hole in it and placed it on his keyring so he would see it every day and remember to pray.
The counselor also told him: if you ever meet someone who needs this cross more than you do, give it away.
Joshua took those words to heart. He began returning to that facility, receiving more crosses, and giving them freely to people who were hurting — sharing hope and pointing them to Jesus.
Just before Joshua passed away, he attended my husband’s 60th birthday celebration. He had been out of work and felt embarrassed to come. We told him not to bring a gift — we simply missed him and wanted to see him. It was a miracle he came at all, and he stayed only a short time.
Before leaving, he handed my husband a small box.
Inside was the cross from his keyring.
I immediately knew how sacred that moment was. Joshua had parted with something deeply precious to him. My husband was not in crisis, but God knew the journey that cross would take. Later, my husband passed that very cross to someone in the greatest need — someone who had lost hope and was close to giving up.
That person was me.
As I held Joshua’s cross in my hand, I was reminded that God is greater than any tragedy and close to the brokenhearted. In my sorrow, I sought Him. And from that place, Joshua’s Cross was born.
I still carry Joshua’s cross on my keyring today. It reminds me that what the enemy meant for destruction, God has used to bring hope to others. Every time the story is shared, a seed is planted. A heart is touched. A life is changed. A soul may be saved.
The cross represents hope, faith, remembrance, and the truth that no one is beyond redemption. Jesus is where healing begins.
Through Joshua’s Cross, we:
Continuing what Joshua began has become part of our healing. His life mattered. God does not make mistakes, and He does not waste pain. When we lean on Him in faith, He turns mourning into testimony, weeping into joy, and heartbreak into purpose.
Who do you know that is suffering?
The cross is more than a small gift. It is a tangible reminder that Jesus Christ is the answer. Each cross carries the promise that Christ died for us and that whoever believes in Him will have everlasting life. It is a call to be light in dark places and a prayer that God continues to work where hope feels lost.
There is hope in Jesus Christ, our Savior.
Thank you for taking the time to hear Joshua’s story. I would be honored to speak with you about how we might partner together to bring hope to those who need it most.
With gratitude and hope, we choose
